& Scenic Drives
At
The Canecutter Statue, cross Jubilee Bridge. Travel east along
the Corso along south bank of river, follow road through East
Innisfail out to Coquette Point. Take in breathtaking views then
returning, turn south along Mourilyan Road.
Take
small detour along Coronation Drive before joining Bruce H'way
south of Innisfail. Continue until Mourilyan (8 km). Stop at
the Australian Sugar Industry Museum and learn about the heritage
of the Sugar Cane Industry.
Take
next left turn to Etty Bay, follow sign left (13 km) & go for
swims
& a picnic lunch under large shady trees that line this charming
beach. Driving
back, take turn on left & go to Mourilyan Sugar Terminal (7 km),
view Mourilyan Harbour. The boat ramp is the perfect place to set
off for a visit to the coral beaches of Barnard Islands (N.P. permits
required) or Olive Rock for a spot of fishing.
Return
to Innisfail.
From
Innisfail, drive south on Bruce H'way (1 km) and at Townsville
turn off, drive straight ahead to South Johnstone (8 km), Mena
Creek and Paronella Park Heritage Gardens (16 km), a must see
destination, needing to be seen to be believed (allow 2 hrs).
Historic buildings, rainforest walks, tropical gardens, swimming & picnic
area.
Drive
on over the many streams and enjoy the wonderful scenery, to
Silkwood, historic sugar growing area and home of Australia's
smallest National Bank, and on to Kurrimine Beach, where King
Reef is just 100 metres off shore. Return to Innisfail via Bruce
Hway, Turn right to Cowley Beach. 4WD south along a beach track,
view or visit the uninhabited Barnard Is. (All campers must purchase
a permit from National Parks).
